COMEG hails UNILORIN’s Geophysics Dept.

The Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geosciences (COMEG) has commended the quality of services and facilities obtainable at the Department of Geophysics, University of Ilorin.

This was disclosed by the accreditation team of COMEG, which recently visited the Department while presenting its findings last Tuesday (April 23, 2024) to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.

The Council was particularly excited by  the University’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the educational experience for Geological students through the prioritisation of staff development programmes, provision of modern equipment, and ensuring students’ access to current and comprehensive library resources.

The leader of the team, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, highlighted several key areas of commendation and recommendations as he enjoined the University authorities to consider the panel’s observations.

Prof. Olayinka, who is the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, commended the Department of Geophysics for its academic excellence.

 While commending the accuracy of the staff-student ratio, the team lead noted that his team found all lecturers of the Department to have obtained Ph.D. qualifications, reflecting a commendable level of expertise.

He also reported that the Department’s staff expressed their delight with the array of opportunities provided by the University management for their professional growth, underscoring a supportive and nurturing work environment expected of a serious university system.

He also commended the University for always supporting staff members with financial incentives, which facilitate  their contributions to high-impact journals, a practice, he described, as commendable and worthy of continuation to foster a culture of scholarly engagement.

Prof. Olayinka also said that the Department has a complement of modern laboratory equipment, which shows the University’s commitment to equipping students with the state-of-the-art resources for practical learning and research.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovations), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, appreciated the team from the Council of Nigerian Mining  Engineers and Geosciences for the exercise.

The Vice Chancellor said the management is always happy to receive accreditation teams, whether from the National Universities Commission (NUC) or professional bodies, noting that such exercises are instrumental to enhancing the institution’s outputs.
